Summary

The chapel was purpose built in 1776 to replace the Independent Chapel founded in 1772 on Commonhall Street. Initially it held seats for a congregation of 900, but the original building was virtually rebuilt in 1838. A town plan from 1850 depicts a chapel with seats for 1000, a Sunday school to the south and a graveyard to the north. The chapel burnt down in 1963 and the congregation dissolved the following year. Although the chapel was never rebuilt, the façade has been retained in the present Tesco supermarket built on the site.
