Monument record 2034/1 - Post Medieval Buildings and Site of Possible Watermill in Macefen

Please read our .

Summary

The tithe map for Macefen Township (circa 1838) shows two buildings located on the south bank of a watercourse to the north of Millmoor Farm. The tithe apportionment describes the corresponding plots as 'croft' and 'outlet and garden'. First edition Ordnance Survey mapping shows a single building in this location which appears to correlate with one of those on the tithe map, also the watercourse adjacent to the building appears to have been straightened and possibly represents a leat. Air photographs dating to the 1940s show the building to have been demolished but it is possible that below-ground remains still exist. References to ‘le myll mor’ date from at least the fifteenth century and has been taken to indicate the presence of a watermill in this approximate location.
