Monument record 1907/1 - Barrow Watermills

Please read our .

Summary

There are 3 separate watermill sites at or near Barrow. Two mills were in use in 1086, but Domesday does not define the precise location of watermill. A watermill is again referred to in 1154-60, but by 1190-1211 a new mill had been built using an existing mill dam. The mill on this site was probably first established by John, Constable of Chester, 1178-90. The other sites are Swinford Mill and the placename Milton, where the road to Stamford Bridge crosses Salters Brook.
