Full Description
Site of Bache Mill, first mentioned 1119. A watermill site near the A5116 just over one mile north of Chester Cross. In 1119, Earl Richard gave to St Werburgh's Abbey the right to build a watermill at Bache (where the Liverpool Road now crosses the stream a mile north of Chester Cross). This was for the benefit only of the Abbey and its tenants in Northgate Street, all other inhabitants of Chester were bound to use the Dee Mills (RN: 3008/4/ 1) (1). After the Dissolution, the mill was worked by the Bavand family. The watermill remained until 'modern times' (2).
