This stretch of rail connected the Wirral Colliery (or Denna/Denhall Colliery) to the Birkenhead Railway.

Article discussing the history of coal mining in the Neston area.

The silting up of the estuary was certainly a very significant factor in the closure of the colliery but was not the only one.
