Summary

Watermill in Shotwick parish. Mentioned in 1302 in the Plea Rolls. Mill field names from the Tithe map suggest the location. However Norris states that Shotwick mill is recorded as having had one of the finest dams on the Peninsula & that it may have been a tide mill before the silting up of the Dee estuary. The field names located on the Tithe Map point to a watermill on a substantial stream at c.50 ft above sea level. Watermills are known to have been used in Britain during Roman and Saxon times. In the Domesday survey of 1086, around 6,000 mills were recorded. In medieval times each manor that the right to have its own mill with the peasants forced to use it. A tax was payable on all corn ground and there were fines for those to tried to mill corn in their own homes using hand querns.
