Summary

A circular mound depicted on historic maps is belived to be the site of a windmill. A rectangular depression to the south of the mound is possibly the quarry pit from which the material for the mound was extracted. Crusaders returning from mainland Europe are credited with the introduction of windmills in Britain and they were many operating by the end of the 12th century.

Full Description

Grass and tree covered mound with a diameter of twenty metres and an average height of one metre and thirty centimetres. It is flat topped and resembles a windmill mound. No trace of a windmill remains.

The mound is depicted on this map. To the immediate south is a rectangular depression c.70 metres long and 30 metres wide. Located on the southern side of the depression is a marl pit. The mound is defined by a ditch on it’s northern, western and eastern side. The depression may be the quarry pit associated with mound. The mound is named Windmill Hill.
