Summary

Possible site of windmill. Two large sandstone bases, one made from 3 individual slabs laid edge to edge, carefully leveled. Found at a depth of c.9 inches on top of a low rise with open views on all sides. Apparently other slabs had been moved from the area by the father of the informant. traces of clay on and around slabs. The area to the north has been leveled in recent timed to fill a small pond. Crusaders returning from mainland Europe are credited with the introduction of windmills in Britain and they were many operating by the end of the 12th century. There are no surviving examples of medieval windmills.

Full Description

Possible site of windmill. Two large sandstone bases, one made from 3 individual slabs laid edge to edge, carefully leveled. Found at a depth of c.9 inches on top of a low rise with open views on all sides. Apparently other slabs had been moved from the area by the father of the informant. traces of clay on and around slabs. The area to the north has been leveled in recent timed to fill a small pond.
