On the 1875 town plan the buildings in the site are marked. They are; a purifying house; a retort house; a work shop; an engine house and four gasometers (or Gas Holders)

The first gas works in Crewe was located at Lockitt Street and was opened by the
Grand Junction Railway Company in c1842-3.
