Monument record 2417/1/11 - Preston on the Hill Deviation

A straight section of road between Preston Brook Bridge and The Oaklands (The Daresbury Park Hotel) is labelled as a Roman Road.

The road is clearly later than the surrounding field systems (see 1) and is not depicted on Burdett’s 1777 map. The Chester Road was established as the Chester to Warrington turnpike in 1786 (see 4). It is probable that this is a deviation established to bypass Preston on the Hill and Red Brow, straightening and widening the road.
