Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2024 during the installation of a new water pipeline. The monitored works comprised two sections of pipe trench: trench 1 extended from Boughton sewer treatment works in the north (NGR 341987 366523) to the Mount Inn in the south (NGR 341946 366379), while trench 2 passed through Caldy Nature Reserve, south of Caldy Brook (centre: NGR 341985 365149). The scheme falls within the Chester and Boughton Area of Archaeological Importance (AAI). Much of the northern extent of the pipe trench was disturbed by modern utilities, which impacted the survival of any archaeological remains. Potential remains of the Chester tramway were recorded at the junction between Brassey Street and Tarvin Road. A small finds assemblage comprising animal bone and a fragment of clay tobacco pipe was recovered from a modern ground levelling layer. (1)
