Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2019 at Little Moreton Hall during groundworks for installation of a new power supply cable. Previous work on site include a geophysical survey (ECH4545) and test pitting (ECH4563) in the orchard east of the hall in 2009 which revealed evidence for potential medieval timber structures sealed below post-medieval demolition material, as well as a track and revetment associated with the prospect mound. A 2010 watching brief (ECH4818) in the overflow carpark uncovered only modern services.
The current works were located adjacent to the west walls of the hall, and uncovered undated structural remains. The remains comprised two east-west orientated brick walls with the southern-most associated with a brick and flagstone floor. Further to the north was an east-west orientated stone wall with square cut sandstone blocks which appears to pre-date the buried garden soil encountered at the base of the trench. (1)
