Site Event/Activity record ECH7287 - Malpas Wastewater Treatment Works: Cultural Heritage Desk Based Assessment

A desk-based cultural heritage assessment was produced in 2023 to inform a proposed upgrade and extension of the existing Malpas Wastewater Treatment Works on land to the south-east of Malpas, Cheshire. The majority of heritage assets within the study area will be too distant from the works for there to be impacts arising from a change to their setting. However, both above ground and archaeological remains of a 19th century waterworks, the Good Moors Water Works (HER REF: 15870), are present within and next to the site, including a pond which once provided freshwater to Malpas. The remains of the Good Moors Water Works are of local significance for their historical and archaeological interests. The proposed works would cause less than substantial harm to this asset, through the possible removal of part of the earthen dam on the south-eastern side of the pond as well as a change to the setting of the pond, and through the possible removal of part of the archaeological remains of the engine house building. There is also potential for previously unrecorded archaeological remains to be impacted within the site, including features associated with the Good Moors Water Works, such as outbuildings, channels, or rubbish pits, although not in the northern part of the site where the majority of the proposed works will take place, as this area was previously disturbed by a 20th century sewerage works.
