Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2023 at Poolhead Farm, King Street, Middlewich, Cheshire, during the excavation of foundation trenches for a new extension. The site was deemed to be potentially archaeologically significant as in the field directly to the north, a programme of archaeological work was undertaken in 2021 which identified Roman deposits relating to salt manufacture with related settlement. The development site also sits on the postulated route of the Roman road (Kings Street) leading from the scheduled monument of Harbutts field to the north of the site; the road was positively identified in excavations in 2000. However, no archaeological deposits or artefacts were recorded during the ground works and it is therefore surmised that this part of King Street lies outside of the area of Roman activity discovered recently to the north along King Street.
