Description

Desk-based assessment produced in 2019 to assess and understand the potential impacts of the proposed A51 Tarvin Road Highway Improvement Scheme (centred at SJ 46301 67233) upon the historic environment. Within the Study Area there are 2 scheduled monuments (MM001-2):- ● Roman Camp on Stamford Heath ● Roman Camp at Stamford Lodge The following non-designated assets of medium and low value will be directly impacted: ● Moderate to large physical impact upon paleo-environmental remains and archaeological waterlogged deposits at Stamford Bridge (MM072); ● Moderate to large physical impact upon the Chester to Manchester Roman road (MM014 & MM024), and associated crossing point at the River Gowy, which lies to the immediate south of Stamford Bridge; and ● Slight physical impact to post-medieval remains at the junction of Hare Lane and A51 Tarvin Road (MM007) and at the Tarvin Road Roundabout Additionally, there will be some slight, indirect impacts to the following designated and non-designated assets: ● Grade II Listed Holme Street Hall, Holme Street (MM004); ● Stamford Bridge Inn, Barrow Lane (MM017); ● Homestead & Cottages, Lansdowne Road (MM019); ● Holmebank Cottage, Holme Street (MM031); ● Hockenhull Cottages, Holme Street (MM041); and ● Littleton Hall, Littleton Lane (MM065). Peat and alluvial deposits which have the potential to contain waterlogged archaeological remains and deposits are known to have accumulated in the floodplain of the River Gowy. For this reason the borehole logs within the vicinity of the bridge (WS08, BH01 & BH02) have been reviewed in order to understand the precise nature of the deposits in this area and ascertain whether further archaeological investigation will be required.
