Description

The pleasure ground with circular path enclosed by mature planting is all that survives of the villa’s historic designed landscape. Principal remaining features Whitehall Listed Building Grade II, List Entry Number: 1228364 Front Wall & Steps Listed Grade II, List Entry Number: 1228365 Part of brick boundary wall of Hartford Lodge estate on School Lane Sandstone garden boundary wall in good repair Brick sections of garden boundary wall in varying states of repair Wrought iron garden gate, presumed to be behind close board fencing Significance The significance of Hartford Lodge lies chiefly in its design by John Douglas Senior, and is the only villa known to have been designed by him. Complete with outbuildings, gardens, pleasure grounds, paddocks and parkland, it was one of small a number of villas in Hartford built for and owned by salt proprietors, and remained intact until the 1930s. Its change of name from Hartford Lodge to Whitehall reflects its change of ownership to the Local Authority. Now in private ownership once more, the villa remains an important historic building and landmark on a busy local road, set above road level with its curved and recessed stone retaining walls with steps, associated brick boundary walls and gateways.
