Description
Four new trial trenches at the location were opened up in July 2022 to locate and investigate the potential features/ anomalies identified during surveys over the previous three years and to extend the kiln trench to find the extent of the Kiln site.
The aims of the 2022 season was to establish the type, the extent of and dating of the Romano-British pottey kiln at the site. The pottery recovered from the trench dates to the 1st- 3rd century AD and together with the coins, firmly dated the trench to this period. Kiln type also confirmed as a Musty 1 type.
Trench 6 contained no archaeological features
Trench 7 contained a possible pit and posthole. Finds included pottery sherd, lead spindle whorl and a fragment of roman trumpet brooch.
Trench 8 uncoverd an arrangement of large stones with pottery, bone and hobnail finds. Unknown function of the stones at present.
Trench 9 contained a number of ditches and cuts and a small number of Roman finds including a roman coin
Archaeomagnetic sampling carried out in 2021 is reported as having inconculsive dating due to the magnetic disturbance on ste.
