Description
The Vicarage was built in 1846-48 to the design of the architect George Gilbert Scott for the Reverend John Armitstead, Vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Sandbach.
Surrounded by a designed landscape of c.50 acres, it remained the residence of Armitstead vicars until 1941.
Principal historic features remaining (from pictorial evidence):
• house of 1846 built to the design of G.Gilbert Scott,
• tree-lined drive,
• trees and shrubs of C19th century planting,
• woodland (part of),
• boundary wall to former East parkland
Significance:
The significance of the site lies principally in the survival of the exterior of Scott’s building, and
shrubs and trees in the vicinity of the house and in the woodland; these may date back to
mid-Victorian planting
