Description
Survival: Formerly the seat of the Richardson family, the house of 1792 was demolished in the early 1970s. An older half-timbered hall was demolished, the site was traceable near Dunkirk Lane in the 1950s (Cheshire Village Memories). This site on the E side of Dunkirk Lane and the railway is noted as “Moat“ on maps.
Previous form: The main house of 5 bays was extended and outbuildings are shown on the maps. The garden is shown as having paths, groups of trees and a large oval open area, probably that area still bounded by a wall.
Current form: The woodland shown on maps still exists, and has snowdrops and bluebells in spring, it can be seen from Capenhurst Lane and from the adjoining Dunkirk Lane. After demolition of the hall, a house, now called The Dovecote, was created from the outbuildings, or those of the adjacent farm. At least a portion of the garden wall stands, but is heavily overgrown with ivy and trees and is propped in places.
