Description

Research and recording report for Moston Manor Farm Site of a manor in the Middle Ages. Since 1871 documented as a dairy farm. Principal remaining features Farmhouse (Grade II) “probably 1830s, but with some possibly earlier features”1 Victorian layout of orchard, kitchen garden and small pleasure garden - to be confirmed Named Moston Manor, the site lies on a slight rise and occupies a triangle of land between Green Lane and Plant Lane. The house and farm buildings were probably re-built and modernised in the 1840s. They occupy the centre of the site and are accessed by a straight drive from Plant Lane. Another straight track leads from the site’s S boundary into the adjoining fields. The E part of the grounds consists of 2 fields, probably paddocks, and a large pond (drainage). The W part of the grounds contains an enclosed garden S of the house, a kitchen garden, an orchard. The treebelt along Green Lane and its two ponds are still extant. The line of the gardens’ S boundary also remains intact; it consists of a deep ditch, evidence of the continuing need for drainage. The plan of 1910 and the aerial photograph of c. 2013 show virtually no change in the layout of the farm’s grounds since 1873.
