Description
Watching brief undertaken during the excavation of a new wildlife pond which corresponded with the postulated course of the Roman Road from Chester to Wirral (Margary 670) (CHER 2010/1/0). Topsoil was stripped to the top of natural, no archaeological features were observed except for a north-east to south-west aligned field drain comprising a hand formed a ceramic tile hand formed into a horseshoe prior to firing. The curved tiles sat upon abase composed of roofing slates, opposed to the more usual flat ceramic tile. The absence of a stamp on the ceramic tile suggests that it predates 1826 when such a stamp would exempt the tile from the brick tax levied from 1784 to 1850.
