Description
An Archaeological Watching Brief was carried out during groundworks at land to the south of Stretton Hall Lane, Tilston, Malpas, Cheshire, SY14 7EF. Three non-designated Heritage Assets lie within the site: part of the Tilston to Grafton Roman Road (1700/1/4), a roadside settlement (1768/1/0) and two Roman coins (1768/1/1; 1768/1/6). Also an Archaeological Evaluation carried in April 2021 (ECH6925) produced features of a Roman date (late 1st and 3rd centuries AD), and the remnants of an occupation deposit. There was a general trend in the evaluation for the Roman archaeology to be more concentrated in the north and eastern parts of the site hence the implementation of a watching brief to monitor the remainder of the site area. Two natural colluvial deposits were encountered which produced two sherds of Roman pottery likely a result of hill wash. No archaeological deposits were encountered in the area subject to monitoring, which confirms the suggestion that archaeological deposits are confined to a fairly thin strip alongside the Roman road from Chester to Whitchurch and do not extend for any great distance to the south west.
