Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2022 on land at Betchton Hall, Love Lane, Betchton, as part of the development of a new external swimming pool. The principle archaeological interest at the site was of former garden features shown on the historic Ordnance Survey maps and depicted lying within the location of the new swimming pool. None of these garden features were observed during the archaeological watching brief and it can be surmised that they had been fully removed once they had gone out of use. The revealed stratigraphy showed that a 0.6m deep topsoil had been imported and spread across the site, presumably to level the garden surface. This sealed an in-situ topsoil and subsoil horizon, the latter of which produced two sherds of post-medieval blackware ceramic. (1)
