Description

A watching brief was undertaken in 2022 at 'Roaring Bridge', Tabley Mere, Knutsford, to monitor structural works on the north side the bridge. Roaring Bridge lies within Tabley House, a grade II Registered Park and Garden (list entry number: 1000645). It was constructed as part of the landscaping associated with Tabley House, a grade I listed house by John Carr of York (completed in 1769) (list entry no.1115424). On the south side of the bridge is a late 18th century brick boat house which is Listed Grade II (NHLE1329687); access to the boathouse is from the bridge. The bridge is constructed of red brick and comprises three arches. There have been numerous interventions; all arches have been bricked up to impost level and brick buttresses have been added to the piers. Prior to works, the ground on both sides of the bridge was wet and overgrown. The bridge is no longer in use as a track and is fenced off to the east and west; as a result the track across the bridge has grassed over. (1)
