Description
Summary:
The history of Sutton manor goes back to Norman times. The Hall’s defensive location at the edge of a steep slope was an advantage in medieval times. Rebuilt several times, the extant building has been dated to the 16th or 17th century. Although there have been later alterations and additions, the most recent in 2008, the setting and appearance of the building remains substantially intact.
From c.1720 to 1895 Sutton Hall was a leasehold farm, providing absentee owners with a rental income and the right to sell parcels of land.
In 1840 the owner divided the property into two separate leaseholds. While Sutton Hall Farm comprised 265 acres, the grounds of Sutton Hall were reduced to 2.9 acres, reduced further in 1970, when the large kitchen garden was sold.
A major refurbishment of buildings and grounds took place in 2007-08, when Sutton Hall became a gastro pub.
Principal remaining features:
• Sutton Hall - Listed Grade II (1139474)
• Chapel and Chaplain’s House - Listed Grade II (1542/1/2)
• Sutton Hall Farm - Listed Grade II (1139478)

• The aspect of open parkland remains West and Northwest of the Hall, now grazed by cattle.
• The long, curving drive has remained intact since 1819. It is fenced and lined with trees.
• Mature trees line the Hall’s West boundary.
• The sloping garden East of the Hall remains within the bounds of 1970.
Remodelled in 2008, it is laid to lawn and framed with mature trees and shrubs.
• The Tree Preservation Order lists 36 trees and 10 species.
