Description

Summary The site shows four phases of development and changes. 1760 – 1855: Georgian house with modest grounds of ca.18 acres. Several owners and lessees 1855 – 1923: Height of expansion and development of the grounds and gardens by owners who were avid plant breeders and collectors. Developments include creation of a parkland setting and the building of a conservatory, a terrace, and nine glasshouses in the walled gardens. 1923/24 – 1984: Decline: sales of land and road building decimate the grounds. 1984 - 2020: Conversion for use as a hotel within 12 acres of grounds. Restoration of principal historic features remaining. Principal remaining features House of 1760 with several periods of alterations, listed Grade II (NHLE: 1229523) Conservatory of ca.1860, listed Grade II (NHLE: 1229370) Ha-ha, wall and railings of West terrace, listed Grade II (NHLE: 1229531) 41 trees listed in current Tree Preservation Order, many of C19 date. Scheduled Monument: part of a Roman camp 200 m South of Hoole Hall (NHLE 1015129)
