Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2020 at Old Hall, Tatton Park, Cheshire, WA16 6SG, centred at SJ 75684 81352. The Watching Brief was needed to monitor all ground disturbance associated with the laying of a new concrete foundation for the rebuild of a 20m section of red brick boundary wall which had previously collapsed.
The archaeological watching brief monitored the excavation of topsoil and subsoil down to the top of a formation level of 0.5m deep exposing a geological substrate which comprised yellow fine grained sand. No archaeological remains were observed within the trench or the two test pits that were excavated. This may have been influenced by past the construction of the original enclosure wall. No finds were recovered, and no environmental samples were taken. (1)
NOTE: No consultation record for this watching brief as it was registered as an LBC. Given that it is a registered garden, adjacent to a scheduled monument and on national trust property, Kirsty Lloyd, DC Archaeologist, oversaw the mitigation.
