Description

A Statement of Significance was prepared in 2020 for Mount Pleasant and Well Bank House, Well Bank Lane, Over Peover, prior to re-development, including demolition of Mount Pleasant. Both properties are depicted on the 1841 Cheshire Tithe Map and the 1st edition OS Map of 1876. The small outbuilding/stable block adjacent to Well Bank House is also considered. The assessment discusses the historical and map data, together with the findings of a site visit of the interior and exterior of both houses. It gives a summary of the history and development of the local area, the history of the sites and a description of Mount Pleasant and Well Bank House. Mount Pleasant dates from pre-1841 as a house with garden, owned by James Slater, a local farmer who lived in a nearby property and occupied by the Deakin family who were agricultural labourers. It may have been subdivided in the early 20th century and was substantially rebuilt as an aspiration home in the late 20th century. The core of Well Bank House was identified as a small house with garden in 1841. It was extended in several stages and, during the 20th century, was known as Well Bank Cottage, although it has the dimensions of a substantial house. The small outbuilding to its north dates from sometime after 1909 and has been either extended or the northern section completely rebuilt. The assessment concludes that both Mount Pleasant and Well Bank House have been substantially altered and the majority of original features removed. (1)
