Description
An Archaeological Watching Brief was carried out in 2019 in the northern grounds of Delamere Forest, Cheshire, prior to the development of the site, comprising construction of a new visitor centre, car parking and erection of 67 Holiday Cabins. The area was monitored during groundworks associated with topsoil stripping, works for access roads and services, maintenance building, significant landscaping, excavation for pile caps and for excavation of cabin footings. The site lies within an area known to be active during the Prehistoric and Roman period. It was within the Forest of Mara, which was used for hunting during the Medieval period. In the Post Medieval phase Victorian and Edwardian Listed Buildings have been built either side of the site.
The watching Brief did not encounter any archaeological features or finds, however, an intact 20th century commemorative Family plaque was identified to the side of a pathway. This was recorded and left in situ. Fragments of a second memorial were also recovered from the topsoil. (1)
