Description

A Level 2 Historic Building Record was undertaken, in 2021, at Watermill Cottage, Cuddington, Cheshire (NGR 359240, 371721). The work has been carried out in order to comply with planning permission for the demolition of the existing buildings. The cottage dates to the mid-late 18th century, standing within an elongated plot on the south side of Norley Road. The building was owned and occupied as a farm with a small landholding in the mid-19th century. Five broad phases of construction have been inferred based on the visible materials, form of the building and information visible in the historic map sequence, with key periods of construction and extension in the 18th-early 19th century, late 19th century, early 20th century and late 20th century. In these latest phases the cottage had been modernised, obscuring the original building materials and resulting in the loss of many original features. (1)
