Description

An Archaeological Watching Brief was carried out in 2017 during groundworks at Ashton Lane, Ashton Hayes, Cheshire. The Watching Brief was implemented because of the potential for archaeological remains on the site. The site lies to the south of a conservation area which encompasses the main body of Ashton Hayes village; research shows there is no evidence of Prehistoric activity within the site. Two Roman coins have been found within the village of Ashton Hayes and 1km to the south part of the Roman Road Watling street has been located. There are no Scheduled Monuments or Listed Building on the site, however, a Grade II* listed building, Aston Hall Farmhouse (1130556), lies 300m east of the site and a known Medieval Kiln (1006776) is located 320m to the northeast. During the Watching Brief several features were encountered, including a linear and pit feature in the north-east corner; a rectangular feature to the north and several intact north-south aligned field drains. All features are thought to date between the 19th and 21st centuries, with the pit feature possibly associated with marl extraction within the localised area. (1)
