Description

Following on from an earlier desk-based assessment undertaken in 2018 (R4191), a further desk-based assessment, also a field visit, were undertaken in 2019 at Radway Green, near Crewe. Until the mid-twentieth century, this was a rural area comprising enclosed fields, but in the early years of World War 2, a vast small arms factory was established here, known as Radway Green Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF). Parts of this have now been demolished, but buildings survive within the Radway Green Business Centre which should be considered as of local significance (Buildings 2 to 8) and which should be subjected to a programme of archaeological recording, prior to any proposed redevelopment.
