Description
An archaeological desk-based assessment was produced in 2020 for land at the former Wade Works, Northwich, prior to redevelopment for residential purposes.
Historically, mid-nineteenth century maps show the site had been entirely encloses by at least 1846 and that, by the late nineteenth century, localised areas had been exploited for clay extraction and salt workings. By the mid-twentieth century, Wade Works, a chemical factory established to aid the war effort, was established on the eastern half of the site. The Wade Works was closed in 1992 and the majority of the buildings demolished in 1993. Buildings associated with two former brickworks were also demolished and the site has subsequently been unoccupied. (1)
