Description
A rapid archaeological assessment was undertaken in 2019 for a plot of land off Cuppin Street, Chester, prior to the proposed development of a 6 storey Aparthotel. The site falls within the occupied part of the south‐western corner of the Roman fortress, the truncated rampart and corner tower occupying the road immediately to north‐east of the plot. The proposed development area coincides with the fortress ditch. Another consideration concerns the Church of St. Martin which formerly occupied the north‐western part of the site and which was surrounded by an extensive graveyard. The church was closed in the mid nineteenth century due to the large number of burials present.
This assessment, including map regression and archival research, has been produced to inform the foundation design and footprint of the proposed new development. It recommends that the footprint of the development should avoid the northern part of the site where the church and its graveyard are known to have been located to avoid the disturbance of buried human remains.
