Site Event/Activity record ECH6691 - Land off Barleycastle Lane, Appleton, Warrington: Historic Environment Desk-Based Assessment

A desk-based assessment was undertaken in 2017 for land off Barleycastle Lane, Appleton, Warrington, in support of an application to develop a Regional Distribution Centre. The land is located 2.1km south-east of the village of Appleton and covers an area of 15.7ha. A site visit was also made on 2nd May 2017. The development site is considered to have low archaeological potential for prehistoric and Roman periods. There is more potential for remains of medieval date, as documentary evidence records Appleton Thorn in the Domesday Book, also the scheduled monument, Bradley Hall Moated Site, is situated just circa 493m to the north-east. Additionally, the alleged site of Bradley Cross lies wthin the site footprint. There is also moderate potential for remains of post medieval date, with three Grade II listed, post medieval farm buildings close by. Also, there is moderate potential for remains dating to World War II, with the RNAS Stretton and associated aircraft yard located to the south and west. (1)
