Description

Magnetic and twin probe electrical resistance surveys were commissioned to explore the site of a possible promontory fort at Peckforton Mere as part of an ongoing project examining fortified sites of presumed Iron Age date in Cheshire. The magnetic data was found to contain variation due to changes in soil chemistry and weak signs of ridge and furrow, but of an enclosure nothing was seen. In contrast, the electrical resistance survey revealed clear anomalies typical of the bank and ditch of a fortified enclosure.
