Description

Research and recording at Thornycroft Hall Summary - House of c.1750 with later additions, stables c.1790, both extant. Walled kitchen gardens, probably late C18: walls extant. - Designed landscape: The landscape gardener John Webb visited the site in 1805. His influence is shown in the early C19 creation of a landscape park with lakes, a serpentine drive through open parkland and perimeter plantations. A large order of trees is documented in 1832. The landscape park survived intact until the sale of c.1935. Since then, further sales have led to division into several private ownerships and the loss of parkland to agriculture. Principal remaining features (not confirmed by any site visits) - Hall and stables - 'Thornycroft Pools': two lakes with an island - Walls of two linked kitchen gardens - Woodlands along the former park's S boundary - Ha-ha
