Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out in July and August 2017 during works at Upper Northgate Street, Chester. The site lies to the immediate north of Chester Roman Fort and the Scheduled Monuments of the walls, tower gates and posterns of the city (1006785) and Abbey Green Roman Site (1006767). There are multiple listed buildings situated along Upper Northgate Street and Northgate Street, with more located within a 500m radius to the south of the site.
During the Archaeology Watching Brief several 19th to 20th century features were encountered including services and a coal hole on the corner of Canal Street and Upper Northgate Street. A potential sandstone linear feature was identified to the east of the Bluecoat Hospital, thought to be a wall of unknown date. (1)
