Description
Assessment of Cultural Heritage impact of roundabout. This chapter presents an assessment of the effects on cultural heritage resulting from the construction and operation of the proposed scheme and identifies measures to mitigate these effects, where necessary.
The site of a post-medieval flour mill and its associated mill pond (Assets 1 and 3, respectively) are located approximately 200 m to the south-west of the proposed scheme. The site has been redeveloped as part of the Cheshire Campus of Manchester Metropolitan University, which is likely to have removed or truncated any associated archaeological remains. Taking their limited potential to contribute to our understanding of post-medieval flour mills at a local level into account, the value of Assets 1 and 3 has been assessed to be Negligible.
Assets 4 and 12 are historic township boundaries located between Haslington and Crewe and Crewe and Monks Coppenhall. The value of these assets is based on their potential to contribute to our understanding of the development of the historic
parish structure. Taking this into account, the value of Assets 4 and 12 has been assessed to be Negligible.
An area of land adjacent to Crewe Green (Asset 5) was the subject of geophysical survey associated with the development of the Crewe Green Link Road. Linear, circular and curvilinear anomalies were identified within the three areas surveyed,
some of which shared the same orientation indicating a possible connection and suggesting they are of similar, possibly archaeological, origin. Detailed information on their date and function was unavailable at the time of writing and taking this into
account, the value of Asset 5 has been assessed to be Unknown.
Potential for unknown archaeological remains Geophysical survey conducted on land in the south-east of the study area identified features of possible archaeological origin (Asset 5 – see above) comprising linear anomalies of unknown date and function (for further information refer to Appendix G
Cultural Heritage Gazetteer
The low number of known archaeological sites within the study area is likely to reflect the limited amount of archaeological investigation previously undertaken rather than an absence of archaeological remains. However, disturbance from
previous development, including the residential and industrial developments within the study area south and west of the existing roundabout may have removed or truncated any such remains. Land north and east of the existing roundabout is
mostly pasture, formed by the removal of field boundaries in the 20th century to accommodate modern farming practices.
Taking disturbance by previous development and the small number of known archaeological sites into account, the potential for the presence of unknown archaeological remains in the study area is considered to be Low.
