Description
Desk-based assessment undertaken in July 2017 for Georgian Mill, also know as Park Green Mill, Macclesfield, prior to re-development of the site. The mill, formerly a silk factory, was fire-damaged in 2011 and is now de-listed. It is located to the south-east of the medieval settlement in Macclesfield and at the south-eastern periphery of the post medieval settlement. It developed as a silk mill in the eighteenth century when the Park Green area experienced rapid growth associated with the silk manufacturing industry.
A site visit and walkover survey was undertaken on the 30th January 2017, the primary objectives being to assess the site's historic landscape context and to identify any evidence for previous truncation of on-site stratigraphy. All external areas of the site were accessible, but due to the unstable nature of the mill building, the internal areas were not accessed. Previous archaeological evaluation work has been undertaken at Park Green Mill in 2005 and 2006, in the form of a desk-based assessment (ECH 4174) and trial trenches (ECH4168).
