Description

Two test pits excavated along the potential line of the Roman spur road to Nantwich previously revealed during excavations at Kingsley Fields (see CHER 7425/1/1). The degraded remains of a possible external surface were encountered within Test Pit 1. It has similarities with the surviving remains of the road at Kingsley Fields and of features associated with the Roman Road from Middlewich to Whitchurch to the north. However, given the limited extent of the investigation, it is possible that this feature is associated with the Welchmonis Yarden site (see CHER 7686) to the immediate west. Test Pit 1 (1m x 1m) - Horse Pasture Located at SJ63865347 within an area of very stony topsoil. This area was c.10m and c.15-20m long with its longest axis aligned north-west to south-east. (100) Topsoil (230mm): a mid-brown clay silt with frequent small to medium rounded stones and occasional large rounded stones. Some seventeenth to eighteenth century ceramics and eighteenth to nineteenth century CBM recovered. (101) Possible external surface (30mm): a light brown grey clay with frequent small to medium rounded stones. (102) Natural: a light brown grey clay with occasional manganese stains. Test Pit 2 (1m x 1m) - Bottom Wood Located at SJ63735359. (200) Topsoil (300mm): a mid-brown clay silt. Some nineteenth century ceramics and CBM recovered. (201) Natural: a light brown grey silt clay.
