Description

Intermitent watching brief on 24.7.17 and 25.7.17 , on works along Cuppin Street, Chester which had been necessitated by emergency repairs to the electrical supply. These works were carried out by Scottish Power and involved the excavation of a trench in the highway between Numbers 6 to 16 Cuppin Street. The trench extended for c 20m and was centred on 4049 6604. The depth of the trench was variable but reached a maximum depth of c 1.2m and was c 0.8m wide. In certain restricted locations, a dark clay soil was apparent at the base of the section but the vast bulk of the trench was occupied by multiple services (gas, electricity, etc) which had completely removed any archaeological strata. Bedrock or natural sand was not visible in the trench so deposits of more interest could survive at depth but, in this part of Cuppin Street, the archaeological interest appears to be absent from modern ground level to a depth of 1.2m.
