Description
Archaeological watching brief, undertaken in April and May 2017, on land adjacent to Lodmore House, Lodmore Lane, Burleydam, during ground reductions associated with the construction of a housing development. The watching brief monitored ground reduction in three areas of the site, where three separate blocks of buildings will be constructed, as well as an L-shaped plot of land between them where the car park and sewage treatment services will be located. A small square plot of land in the south-west corner of the site was also excavated, this will be the eventual site of the on-site gas tanks.
The investigations identified the bases of three irregularly shaped ditches under the area of the car park. Each ditch contained a loosely compacted fill similar to the overlying topsoil. None of the ditches produced any artefactual evidence, they have been interpreted as the bases of former hedgerows.
A small quantity of unstratified nineteenth to twentieth century pottery was recovered from topsoil across the site. (1)
