Description

A Level 2 Historic Building Survey was undertaken for Hield House Barn in January 2017 prior to a scheme of alteration and refurbishment to convert the barn to ancilliary accommodation. Both the exterior and interior of the building were recorded and photographed. The barn forms part of a complex of farm buildings known collectively as Hield House. The principal range of the barn is a two-storey rectangular structure, comprising two haylofts over two rectangular barns, orientated north south and measuring 22.5m by 6.5m. The walls are of unfrogged red brick bonded with mortar, the different brick types demonstrate different phases of construction. It has a double-pitched roof of grey asbestos sheet. The structural evidence suggests it originated as a four brick-pillared barn forming what is now the northern third of the building, this phases probably dates to the mid eighteenth century to early nineteenth century. The pillared barn was later bricked up to form an enclosed outbuilding, possibly for storage. By the production of the Great Budworth parish tithe map of circa 1840, the building is depicted as a rectangular building orientated north-south, suggesting that the southern two thirds of the building had been constructed. On the 1877 OS map, an outbuilding had been added to the northern part of the western elevation thus creating the L-shaped range that now exists. (1)
