Site Event/Activity record ECH6381 - The Bull & Stirrup, Chester: Archaeological Watching Brief Report

An archaeological watching brief undertaken during October and November 2016 at The Bull & Stirrup, 8, Upper Northgate Street, Chester during groundworks for the erection of a single storey rear extension. In the Roman period the site lay to the north of the defences of the legionary fortress of Deva. This area is known to have been used for quarrying during the Roman and Post Medieval periods. During the Roman period they are thought to have been started in the 80s AD and worked intensively throughout the second century. During the Medieval period, the site lay in open fields surrounded by woodland. This watching brief did not exposed any archaeological features but recorded various levels of truncation from Post Medieval development. An assemblage of residual finds dating from the Roman to Post Medieval was recovered. (1)
