Description

Archaeological watching brief during groundworks associated with the erection of two new dwellings on land at The Vicarage, Stretton Road, Appleton, The site lies close to a junction of a major Roman road that ran from Wilderspool to Middlewich, with a minor road that extended east to west along the southern edge of the Mersey valley. In order to expedite the watching brief, two trial trenches were excavated, one across each of the two dwelling plots. This approach rapidly and effectively characterised the archaeological potential of the site. In each trench a layer of building rubble was encountered dating to the 19th or early 20th century. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered. The results demonstrated that he potential of the site is low and that no further archaeological mitigation is deemed necessary
