Description
Groundworks for the new access facilities comprised the excavation of a deep pit for a new rising bollard and two shallow pits for fixed bollards.
Excavation of the deep pit for the rising bollard was undertaken archaeologically and, simultaneously, excavation of the fixed bollard pits was monitored. Within the deep pit excavated for the new rising bollard, deposits of modern and late post-medieval date were encountered extending to a depth of 1.1m below current ground level. The two fixed bollard pits were excavated to a depth of 0.3m below current ground level and did not penetrate much below deposits associated with the modern road surface. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered during the groundworks.
