Description
Over a period of nine months the watching brief was conducted during ground remediation work and the excavations required for the new development. The excavation work exposed evidence of 19th century marl pits, former military structures and field drainage, interspersed with made-up ground and natural deposits of soft to firm brown sandy boulder clay.
No significant archaeological features were recorded during the current programme of work and the only finds recorded were fragments of tableware, stamped for NAAFI use, recovered from the northeast corner of the site where the camp kitchen / refectory was sited.
The implementation of the watching brief has ensured that the last phase of development on the former Saighton Camp site has had no adverse impact on potential significant archaeological remains. (1)
