Description
Following geophysical survey, a combination of both targeted and speculative trenches, numbering five in total, were excavated during October 2016 in response to the requirements of Historic England. The trenches were excavated in order to inform a proposed tractor access route through a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM 13493, List Entry Number 1011228) in land owned by Reaseheath College, Nantwich. The results of the archaeological evaluation have demonstrated that the infilled ditches to the moat and associated annex survive below ground level close to the proposed tractor route alongside the west edge of the monument field. The results have allowed a zone plan to be prepared demonstrating that a route measuring between c. 6m and 8m wide, located close to the west boundary of the field, may be achievable.
