Description

The Department of Art History and Archaeology with the assistance of the University of Manchester Archaeological Unit undertook a building appraisal and survey of the remains of Tabley Old Hall, Cheshire for the University of Manchester in May and June 1999. Tabley Old Hall is a double-depth, two storey five bay building with a main Jacobean symmetrical brick façade of c1670, distinguished by a projecting central porch with classical detailing flanked by Mullion windows and topped by oculus features and a brick parapet. Internally it had fine Jacobean staircase and Jacobean oak panelled room and there was a two bay open hall with cross passage and a spere truss dating from c.1380. Most of this internal detail has been lost and the building is now in a very ruinous condition. Research work consisted of a brief summary of the background and history of the site and a measured survey of the surviving main elevation of the old Hall and a plan of the hall remains.
